New Tradeoffs in an Old Trade: GP1000, Crusoe, ARC

Jakob Engblom

PhD Student, IAR Systems AB and Uppsala University

This talk gives a short introduction to three new CPUs that have attracted some attention in the last year:

  • Transmeta Crusoe (www.transmeta.com)
  • Imsys GP1000 (www.imsys.se, a Java-capable microcoded CPU)
  • ARC Cores (www.arccores.com), user-configurable CPU cores.
The focus is on the philosophy and tradeoff choices behind these CPUs, that all deviate from the accepted conventional wisdom on how to build microprocessors and/or microcontrollers.
